What brought you to CTG UAlbany?

CTG UAlbany is one of the leading centers studying and assisting governments in making the best possible use of opportunities enabled by ICTs to improve the public policies that are addressing the pressing problems of our time. It has been a pioneer in digital government and has repeatedly been recognized for its leadership in the field.

I am a Ph.D. student in Public Administration and Policy at the Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy with a concentration in Government Information Strategy and Management (GISM). My current research interests are on how to help public organizations build data-analytic capabilities. CTG is one of the best places to exercise bridging the body of academic work in that area with the current problems leaders in government are facing.  

What did you do prior to coming to CTG UAlbany?

From 2000 to 2016, I worked in the public sector in Brazil, mainly in the arts and culture sector. In that period, I contributed to the construction of more democratic and effective cultural policies at the state and federal levels. After more than fifteen years of public service, I started my postgraduate studies focusing on my previous work and exploring new topics in the field of public affairs. More recently, I worked at the Bloomberg Harvard City Leadership Initiative (2018-2019) developing teaching cases on the roles and responsibilities of mayors and their teams in driving government performance and leading innovation.

What are your plans/goals for the future?

The experience in academia strengthened my view on the importance of the role played by scholarship in practical matters, particularly by assisting public organizations in confronting complex challenges, the reason for which I chose to continue to contribute to better policies and more effective government through scholarly work.

My professional goal is to build a career as a researcher and a professor at an academic institution that allows me to advance a research agenda on how to build data-analytic capabilities in public organizations. I also hope to maintain a constant interaction with practitioners, collaborating with the work in government or training new leaders for the public sector. Finally, I aim to develop partnerships with research centers and governments from developing regions, increasing the space for their perspectives on the international academic debate and contributing to narrowing the distance between the north and global south.

How can CTG UAlbany help you reach your goal for the future?

All projects I am working on at CTG tackle a central issue in my research topic: how public managers and citizens understand the use of data and how their perceptions affect the public policy process. CTG has on its roster leading scholars in the field and a staff dedicated to making real change in government. Thus, it is one of the best places to explore the opportunities on how to bridge the scope of research and professional practice. I believe that the kind of work developed at CTG benefits all those involved, as it potentially expands the quality of empirical research and facilitates the use of the knowledge produced by those at the front line of public service.
