Brief Bio

Masahiro Yamamoto is an associate professor in the Department of Communication at the University at Albany. 

His research interests include political communication, social media, and civic engagement. His research has examined the role of digital, social, and mobile media in political knowledge, attitudes, and participation. His current work addresses issues of trust in news media, with a particular focus on ways to reduce animosity toward oppositional news outlets and to increase critical thinking of news content. 

His research has been published in peer-reviewed scholarly journals including Communication Research, Communication Theory, Information, Communication and Society, Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication, Journal of Information Technology and Politics, Mass Communication and Society, and New Media & Society, among others.  

He currently serves as an associate editor of Mass Communication and Society. In 2020-2021, he was the head of the Mass Communication and Society Division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication.

In the Department of Communication, he teaches Communication Research Methods, Digital and Social Media in Strategic Communication, and Media Literacy.
